Post Graduate College of Science OU, Saifabad a constituent
College of Osmania University was established in 1951 in the prime locality at the foothills of Banjara hills.

Initially it was established as Inter-mediate college consequent
upon shifting of the Intermediate college from Gulbarga of erstwhile Nizam
state. During the past 47 years the college has shown a steady progress
punctuated by milestones of achievement in higher education.

The Post-Graduate College of Science, Saifabad, a Constituent
College of Osmania University, is located at Masabtank in Hyderabad. It was
established in 1951 in the prime locality at the foot hills of Banjara Hills. Initially it was established as the Intermediate College consequent upon its shifting from Gulbarga of erstwhile Nizam State. Late Nawab Ali Yavar Jung Bahadur, the then Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, used his benevolent offices to acquire the present College campus at Saifabad (in the western part of Hyderabad) from the erstwhile Government of Hyderabad.

The College campus spreads over a total area of 18.173 acres (College main campus 10.46 Acres; Hostel Complex 4.133 acres ; Play Ground 2.74 acres ; Computer Science Block (formerly Warden Quarter) 0.84 acres) with beautiful gardens composed of rare flora of botanical importance. A fossil conifer wood of Araucarioxylon species of early Jurassic age (175 million years) cordially welcomes any enthusiastic visitor to the College. It was gifted to the College by the Geological Survey of India (Southern Region, Hyderabad), a premier earth science organization of the country.

The University has taken special interest in giving a face-lift to the entire campus, and in protecting the valuable open sports field. A new library building was constructed in 2003 and efforts for additional space in first floor are under way. A new building for Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biotechnology has been constructed during the period from 2003 to 2005 under two phases. This new P.G. Block-2 caters to the needs of the said departments and provide a modern Seminar Hall with a capacity of 120 seats.

During the past 5 decades, the College has shown a steady progress, as enumerated below for the cause of higher education as per the contemporary needs of the learning lot:

The period from:

1951-60 -- The decade of establishment and taking roots.

1961-70 -- The decade of strengthening Science Laboratories.

1971-80 -- The decade of starting rare combinations at U.G.

1981-90 -- The decade of blooming: Post Graduate courses were started in Botany, Geology and Zoology in 1980, Chemistry in 1984 and Physics in 1990.

1991-2000 --The decade of fruition: The programmed spurt in research in various fields brought this College to global recognition.

All the departments are actively engaged in research work. The research labs in the College are fully equipped with modern infrastructure.

2001 – onwards The decade of improving infrastructural facilities: During this period a few new buildings have been constructed.
They are :

(i) a green house (Botany)
(ii) a Vector-Biology Control Lab. (Zoology)
(iii) Petrology Lab. (Geology), and
(iv) A new P.G.Block-2 (Physics, Chemistry, Maths,
Biotechnology and College Seminar Hall)
(v) Computer Science block

The courses introduced during the following academic years:
(i) M.Sc. (Biotechnology) – 2005-2006
(ii) M.C.A. (2005-2006 )
(iii) M.Sc. (Applied Mathematics): 1998-99.
(iv) B.Sc.(Biotechnology) with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry: 2002-2003.
(v) B.C.A. (Bachelor of Computer Applications): 1998-1999.

In the brief history of 24 years as a Post-Graduate institute, the College is proud of the
academic achievements by the teaching faculty. The generous funding for research by UGC, DST, CSIR, UGC, ICAR, ONGC, and DAE reflects the active and fruitful research activity being carried out in the College. So far, about 30 major/minor research projects have been completed successfully in various disciplines in the College and at present some research projects are in operation. Two Post-Doctoral students were awarded DST--Young Scientist Schemes, and three faculty members, namely, Dr. J. Ratnakar (Geology) ,Dr. D. Ravinder (Physics) and Dr. Reddya Naik (Zoology) were choosen for national UGC -- Career Awards/UGC – Research Award.

Students enrolled in this college are mostly from the rural areas and courses offered are in the core subjects that form the base line for rural development through extension and research activities. Thus the College offers ample opportunities for students to study and to get involved in nation-building activities through which eventually, they become responsible citizens with good careers.
